I follow general steps in the process of a thorough and thoughtful evaluation of a new neurofeedback client.
My initial assessment of a new client is a semi-structured interview / conversation. I dedicate an hour to gathering information regarding the client’s history, presenting issues, medical history, and other pertinent details. This initial appointment is typically covered by traditional health insurance as it is considered an outpatient mental health visit.
A secondary assessment of a new client is in the form of a “Brain Mapping” or quantitative EEG. This is a 3-part assessment. One hour is dedicated to recording electrical activity at 19 scalp locations. I set aside time to analyze the recordings and compare recorded electrical activity to a normative database of age matched neurotypical brain activity. We will then meet for an hour to review the analysis and findings of the “brain mapping.” The purpose of this assessment is to attain a baseline assessment, connect presenting issues with brain mapping, and aid in the establishment of an individualized treatment plan for neurofeedback training.
Treatment Phase
Neurofeedback treatment planning is individualized to each client and further refined based on their response to training sessions. There are multiple methods of neurofeedback and a variety of neurofeedback “protocols” evidenced to be effective for different applications. Clinical judgment and experience are used to evaluate which types of neurofeedback training may be best suited to the individual.
